Two pedestrians came out at the same time towards each other from two villages. The first can cover the distance between two villages in 8 hours, and the second in 6 hours. How far will they approach in 1 hour?

1. Let’s find what part of the distance each pedestrian can cover in 1 hour.
2. The first pedestrian goes all the way in 8 hours, which means that in 1 hour he will cover 1/8 of the way.
3. The second pedestrian goes all the way in 6 hours, which means that in 1 hour he will cover 1/6 of the way.
4. Pedestrians are moving towards each other, which means that in an hour the distance between them will be reduced by (1/8 + 1/6) part of the path.
5. Find the sum of two fractions by bringing them to a common denominator. LCM of numbers 8 and 6 is 24. We get:
1/8 + 1/6 = 3/24 + 4/24 = 7/24, i.e. in 1 hour, pedestrians will converge on 7/24 paths.
Answer: in 1 hour, pedestrians will approach 7/24 distances.
